Finally: A Completed Set.. And another Closer to it..

I reached out to fellow Canadian blogger Waxaholic  noticing that I had some cards he needed to complete 1991 Score.

He contacted me back saying he had some of the needs I needed plus the one card I needed from the 1991 Ultra set.

This was the lone card I needed to finish the Ultra set.. I find it funny that the first set I finish is one I didn't set about to collect until I ended up with 99.9% of it..
That said, I'm still looking for another copy of the Jays and Expos from the set to go into binders.

This knocked off a fair portion of my 1991 Score want list.
The wants for this set are now 4..
Kent Anderson Corrected (flashy instead of flachy)
Scott Chiamparino Error (Bats Left)
John Cerutti (For whatever reason I feel like I should have about 20 of this one.. But don't.)
Mike Blowers (again.. I thought I had.. Maybe I'll double check and edit)

I will have the cards you needed out tomorrow, Waxaholic. Sorry for the delay.

Since I have two weeks off over Christmas, I think I'm in for a massive undertaking.. With the influx of cards and really having no clue where I stand... I may spend the majority of my vacation going through and updating my collection listings on the Database. This way I also know what I have available for the others out there

Surprises Again

I recently agreed upon a trade with Trading Card Database member Bkim. I received the cards in the mail today..

I had one card he needed, so he let me pick a card or a couple cards from the massive number of cards he has from my want lists. I settled on two that were the only card from that set/subset.
The Then and Now cards show up in different sets. Some of them end up being like this one, with a player from the past and present featured. Others feature the veteran player as a young player and as an older player.
The League Leader card is from 1994 after John Olerud won the AL Batting title in 1993. He was first, Paul Molitor was second.. Roberto Alomar was Third..

I had a bit of a surprise in the envelope when I came across another top loader with this on it

I peeled the Post-it note off and this stared back at me:

Always enjoy getting Expos and Jays, especially early Expos cards.
This was a very pleasant surprise..
Thank you!

Surprise from the Night Owl

I came home after work today and to my surprise, there was a package from Greg at Night Owl Cards.

I had made mention that I liked the 1992 Donruss cards in my last post about them. He also sent a note stating
"I regret I didn't have more gross '92 Donruss to send!"

I will get the pain out of the way first lol. Unfortunately none of these were needs, but I won't complain about it.. lol

Also enclosed were a bunch of Jays and Expos as well as Eric Gagne and Russell Martin cards.
AT one point, Greg made mention about wanting to cut down some of his collection, so I made mention that I'd take any Gagne/Martin since they're Canadians.

I love that Gary Carter card in the middle.

More Jays and Expos.

Russell Martin cards here including an Upper Deck Masterpieces card. The middle Martin is definitely a trip back to 1991-1992 with that design.

The Rob Butler one is going into my Jays binder but I'm still looking for another one for the Canadians binder.
Hey a Paul Konerko/Raul Ibanez rookie card. Oh yeah, and the reason I have it: Julio Mosquera.
Just taking another look at that Homer Bush I think that was taken during a Jays/Expos game.

Thanks again for the cards Greg! Much Appreciated!

Quick Two-Card Post

I haven't been feeling the best the past couple weeks so I just want to do a quick post tonight.

First we have Ruben Sierra in Stadium Club somewhere other than a Stadium. Could be his house.. Could be his home country.. I don't know.. I just thought it was cool..

I think the Star (I know.. Bad Pun) of this post though is the 1981 OPC Willie Stargell I found in the box of cards I bought.

I think it's a rather interesting card and maybe one a Pirates fan may enjoy?

Dream Team

Another Score-Centric post.

From 1990-1992 Score had a subset within the base set called Dream Team, where a player from each position was highlighted.

I have the complete set of them from 1991. I have a few from 1992 and none from 1990.

I want to go over the players chosen based on the cards I have.

The catcher position for the two years I have are Benito Santiago and Craig Biggio. The Biggio is interesting in a way due to the motion effect.

They picked Will Clark for 1st Base both years. I really like the 1992 card with the Polo Grounds backdrop and throwback uniform.
I just noticed the lightning bolt on the bat in the 1991 photo.

I don't have the 1992 2nd base one so we see Roberto Alomar in one of the few that have them in a uniform.

Wade Boggs appears at Third.

Barry Larkin in 1991, Cal Ripken in 1992. The train in the background of the Ripken photo is interesting.

Rickey Henderson in his shorts, though for years I thought it was just his underwear...

Griffey in Centre. No real surprise here. .

Oddly enough, the 1991 set doesn't have a Right Fielder. The 1992 set did.. That one is Tony Gwynn.

The 1991 set did however, have a DH.

Two starters are featured.. Dave Stewart and Frank Viola make the cut from the 1991 set.

The relief pitcher spot is held down nicely by Randy Myers and Mitch Williams.
The Doug Jones is rather funny to me since he was never really a fireballer. I remember the running joke being he could barely break a pane of glass with his pitches.

I have to admit I find a lot of interesting cards in the early 1990s Score sets.. I may have a couple more posts from them yet..

1992 Score: The Random Rookies

Aside from the First Round Draft Pick cards, there are also Rookie Cards..

With the 1992 set, we know who made it and who didn't.. But it's still fun to see how some of the people who were pictured on the cards ended up doing.

Bruce Egloff appeared in 6 games in 1991 for the Indians.
His career in the minors spanned from 1986-1993, with 1988 and 1992 missing.
According to his LinedIn profile, he's working security in the Aurora Public School System.

Don Wakamatsu played 18 games for the Chicago White Sox in 1991.
Wakamatsu played in the minors from 1985-1996 for seven organizations.
Last information I can find he is scouting for the Yankees.

He started in the minors in 1988 and made it to the Majors in 1991.
He currently works in broadcasting, calling baseball games for Fox and as part of the team in MLB The Show.

His professional career spanned from 1986-1998.
After his career ended, he went into coaching in college. The last information I can find is in 2013, however checking the website, he is no longer there.

Jeff Plympton appeared in 4 games in 1991 for Boston.
His professional career spanned from 1987-1993, all with the Red Sox organization.
After his baseball career, he has been the Recreation Director in Wrentham, MA and operates an Elite Baseball League travel program.

John Ramos played in 10 games for the Yankees in 1991.
His professional career spanned from 1986-1996, playing in the Yankees, Padres, and Blue Jays organizations.
He is currently coaching for the University of Tampa.

Kevin Campbell pitched in 77 games from 1991-1995 for the Athletics and Twins.
His professional career spanned from 1986-1995.
I am unsure what he's currently doing, as there are many people with the name Kevin Campbell.

Laddie Renfroe pitched in 4 games for the Cubs in 1991.
His professional career spanned from 1984-1992, all spent in the Cubs organization.
He had to retire as a result of an errant baseball hitting him in the head.
He did some coaching after retirement.

Monty Fariss played in 104 games from 1991-1993 for Texas and Florida.
His professional career spanned from 1988-1995, playing for Texas, Florida, Chicago Cubs, and Monterrey.
I cannot find information on what he currently is doing.

Rico Rossy played in 147 games between 1991-1993 and 1998, playing for the Braves, Royals, and Mariners.
His professional career spanned from 1985-1999, playing in the Orioles, Braves, Pirates, Royals, Padres, Expos, and Mariners systems.

Stacy Jones pitched in 6 games for the Orioles and White Sox in 1991 and 1996.
His professional career spanned from 1988-1997 and played in the Orioles, Giants, Brewers, and White Sox systems.
I cannot find current information for him.

Stan Royer played in 89 games between 1991-1994 for St Louis and Boston.
Royer's career spanned from 1988-1994 for the Athletics, Cardinals, and Red Sox systems.
He is currently the president of a wealth management company in St Louis.

Terry McDaniel played 23 games in 1991 for the Mets.
His career spanned from 1986-1996 in the Mets and Reds systems. He also played three years of Independent baseball.

Any information for Terry McDaniel brings up the former NFL player..

I hope you enjoyed the look back at the 1992 rookies I found.

First Round Pick Cards: 1992 Score

One thing that was a staple of some sets in the late 80s and early 90s was First Round Pick cards. I remember looking through them at different times and wondering whether that player would make it, or in today's case.. Who made it.

Picked 18th in 1st Round by the Mets.
He made it as far as Double-A Wichita for the Royals.

Allen Watson was the 21st pick in the first round by the Cardinals.
He made the majors, playing for ST. Louis, San Francisco, Anaheim, The Mets, Seattle, and the Yankees.
According to Wikipedia, he's a high school baseball coach now.

Benji Gil was drafted 19th in the first round by the Rangers.
He played for Texas and Anaheim in the majors and was playing in the independent leagues as recently as 2012.

Brent Gates was picked 26th by the Athletics.
He played for the Athletics, Twins, and Mariners through his career.
He's a scout for the Rays now.
His son is in the Anaheim Ducks organization

Manny was picked 13th by the Cleveland Indians.
He played in the Majors for Cleveland, Boston, Los Angeles, the White Sox, and Tampa.

Green went to Philadelphia with the 10th pick.
He played four seasons with the Phillies.

Tyrone Hill was chosen 15th by the Milwaukee Brewers.
He made it as far as Double-A Midland for the Angels.

While trying to find out what he's currently doing, I was only able to find information on the basketball player.

A Trade from down the Highway and More

Another week has passed and I wanted to take a look at a trade I made with Fellow Blogger/Canadian/Jays Fan CrazieJoe plus a quick little look around from the highest point in Peterborough.

First the cards..

Some 1990 Donruss and 1991 Donruss set needs here plus Goose Gozzo minor league card.
The Pro Set Hockey were also a want for me as I enjoy the history-based cards that were in this set.

1989 Topps Needs and more.
Although I can be obsessive about some things, one thing I won't do is chase all the minute variations from the 1990 Donruss set. I don't really care about line placement, etc..

The Upper Deck classic set looks like it's a nice one based on what he's shown from his "Santa Lot" as he gets them. This came up one day as a duplicate and I knew I needed it.. I think if any of my collections are going to drive me insane it'll be trying to get the Canadians.. Or the Stadiums...

Now, in previous posts I've shown a few photos of areas I have driven for charters. Normally I'll throw Scott Ruskin in there to make it card related. I did not do that today though..

This is a shot from the top of the drumlin here in Peterborough.. Honestly, I'd prefer if they kept the trees trimmed down so you could actually see out, but nature takes its course..

I had to edit the pictures in order for us to see anything. The above photo is actually the back of a school along the side of the hill.

This is another one looking more toward downtown. The area I took these from is called East City, kind of a city within a city here in Peterborough.

One of the major industries here in town.. Quaker Oats.

I just thought this looked interesting. A rock that had the designs carved into it.

I hope you enjoyed the little look from the hill. I may take more again from up there later on in the winter.

Thanks Joe for the trade!
